Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Florida’s 25th district since 2005, posted a series of statements on September 30, 2025, criticizing Republican lawmakers for their handling of an impending government shutdown and its impact on healthcare.
In her first post at 13:48 UTC, Wasserman Schultz stated, “Republicans have steered us into a healthcare crisis. There’s less than a 24 hours until the government shuts down because they refuse to protect Americans’ healthcare from massive price hikes.”
Later that afternoon at 15:22 UTC, she added, “Democrats are in Washington, ready to work to avoid a shutdown and protect Americans’ health care. But Republicans refuse to negotiate, and went on vacation instead.”
By early evening at 17:10 UTC, Wasserman Schultz described her actions in Congress: “I just came out of the House Chamber to demand a vote on @HouseDemocrats’ proposal to fund the government and protect Americans’ healthcare. With hours left until a shutdown, Republicans decided to not show up for work and close the chamber down.”
Wasserman Schultz has represented Florida’s 25th District in Congress since replacing Peter Deutsch in 2005. Before her tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, she served in the Florida Senate from 2000 to 2004 and the Florida House of Representatives from 1992 to 2000. She was born in Queens, New York in 1966 and currently resides in Weston. Schultz graduated from the University of Florida with a BA in 1988.
The posts reflect heightened tensions in Congress as lawmakers face an imminent deadline to prevent a government shutdown that could affect federal operations and healthcare funding.
