U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who represents Florida’s 25th district in Congress, posted a series of tweets on December 14 and 15, 2025, addressing both the celebration of Chanukah and a recent attack on Australian Jews.
On December 14, Wasserman Schultz condemned an act of violence overseas: “This horrific, targeted mass murder of Australian Jews on the first night of Chanukah is a direct result of the global vilification and dehumanizing rhetoric aimed at the Jewish community. This attack must be denounced by all and leaders must take action to address antisemitism,” she wrote.
Later that evening, she expressed solidarity with Jewish families during the holiday: “Tonight I join Jewish families worldwide to celebrate the festival of lights. #Chanukah unites us to recount blessings and unexpected triumphs, and spend time with loved ones. Happy Chanukah FL-25!”
On December 15, Wasserman Schultz shared her participation in a local event: “It was moving to join the Chabad of Weston to celebrate the first night of Chanukah in my hometown. It was an honor to help light the first candle and join our community for a night that made coming together after the terrorist attack in Sydney all the more important.”
Wasserman Schultz has served in Congress since 2005 after replacing Peter Deutsch. Before her tenure in Washington D.C., she held positions in both chambers of Florida’s legislature between 1992 and 2004. Born in Queens, New York in 1966, Wasserman Schultz currently resides in Weston. She graduated from the University of Florida with a BA in 1988.
